Child Eczema Starter Kit two-minute bedtime routine: wash, soothe, lock in, touch up

Eczema Skin Care Routine for Kids: A Simple Bath-to-Bedtime Guide

When our kids have dry, eczema-prone skin, the hardest part is often not the products. It's remembering what to use, in what order, on a tired kid at bedtime. A short, repeatable routine makes it easier for everyone. Here is the simple bath-to-bedtime routine we use, and how the Child Eczema Starter Kit fits into it.

Why a routine matters for eczema-prone skin

Dry skin loses moisture quickly, especially after a bath and during cold, dry months. Doing the same few steps every day, at the same time, helps keep skin moisturized and keeps the routine from turning into a nightly debate. Talk with your pediatrician or dermatologist about their skin, especially if it looks infected or isn't improving.

Step 1: A short, lukewarm bath

Keep baths short (about 5 to 10 minutes) and lukewarm, not hot. Use a gentle, non-stripping wash like our Soothing Body Wash, made with honey, colloidal oatmeal, calendula and chamomile extracts. No synthetic fragrance. For more detail, see our baby eczema bath routine.

Step 2: Pat dry and care for itchy spots

Pat skin gently with a soft towel and leave it a little damp. Within a few minutes, apply Eczema Honey Original Skin-Soothing Cream to itchy, irritated spots. It is an OTC eczema relief cream with colloidal oatmeal, a skin protectant that temporarily protects and helps relieve minor skin irritation and itching due to rashes and eczema. The Original contains almond oil (a tree nut). For kids with nut allergies, choose the Nut-Free Skin-Soothing Cream.

Step 3: Moisturize all over

Follow with Oatmeal Body Lotion on arms, legs and body. With 1% colloidal oatmeal, it temporarily protects and helps relieve minor skin irritation and itching due to rashes and eczema. Our guide to the best lotion for eczema explains lotion vs cream.

Step 4: Daytime touch-ups

School, sports and car rides dry skin out too. The Gentle Face and Body Lotion Stick glides on like a glue stick, so kids can apply it themselves on hands, elbows and cheeks. It's water-free, with mango seed butter, beeswax, honey and oat kernel oil, and no synthetic fragrance. Toss in the Nourishing Lip Balm (0.15 oz) for dry, chapped lips.

Tips that make the routine stick

  • Do it at the same time every night, right after the bath.
  • Let kids pick the order or "be in charge" of the lotion stick.
  • Choose soft, breathable cotton clothes and keep nails short.
  • Patch test any new product on a small area first.
  • For nighttime itch, see our bedtime routine guide.

FAQ

How often should I moisturize our kids' eczema-prone skin?

At least once or twice a day, and always within a few minutes after a bath. Dry spots may need touch-ups during the day.

Should I use cream or lotion?

Many families use both: a thicker cream on itchy, irritated spots and a lighter lotion all over. Read how to choose an eczema cream for our kids.

Is the kit nut-free?

You choose. The Original cream contains almond oil; pick the Nut-Free cream option for kids with nut allergies, and review each product's ingredients.

Is the routine steroid-free?

Yes. Every product in the Child Eczema Starter Kit is steroid-free.
