Why does skin get irritated?
Depending on your skin type, environment, and health, irritated skin could mean a couple of things. For example, maybe your skin gets very dry, rough, flaky, and even cracks and no amount of greasy products seem to give texture-changing hydration. Or, it’s possible your skin gets red, bumpy, and/or itchy with nothing seeming to soothe the burning sensation that comes with it.

It’s also very likely you have experienced a combination of many if not all of these skin irritations. What is the skin barrier?
Before explaining everything the skin barrier does, it’s important to understand its structure. You probably already know that there are many layers of the skin, but it’s important to know that the 3 main layers are the epidermis (the topmost layer), dermis (the middle layer), and hypodermis (the bottom layer).
The outermost part of the epidermis is the skin barrier. Scientists describe it as being like a brick wall of skin cells bound together by essential nutrients that act like mortar. The “bricks” of the wall are referred to as coenocytes and contain keratin & natural moisturizers. The essential nutrients that act like “mortar” are known as lipids that contain cholesterol, fatty acids, and ceramides. In combination, these compounds are known as the skin’s “natural hydrating factor” because they keep the deeper layers of the skin nourished, hydrated, and protected.
What can cause a broken skin barrier?
To put it simply, there are 2 main important factors that can influence a broken skin barrier:

External Environmental Factors:
Dry or humid air, sun-exposure, allergens,
pollutants, and harsh chemicals from
low-quality skincare products.

Diet, stress, sleep,
and atopic dermatitis.

While there are tons of skincare brands to choose from, the quality of every brand’s products are not the same. Unfortunately, many brands focus on glamorous packaging, refreshing fragrances, and added shading to cover up skin irritations, but NONE of these things directly address the skin barrier.
While some brands have formulas that indirectly support the skin barrier, more often than not their formulas aren’t well balanced which makes them impractical to use daily (even though they may claim they are). For example, many cleansers remove dirt and oil too aggressively and wear down the skin barrier; most serums don’t contain the right ingredients to absorb into the deeper layers of skin; and many lotions and creams are uncomfortably greasy and clog pores leading to acne.

Your skin must be prepared before hydrating it by removing dirt, oil, and pollutants that accumulate in your skin throughout the day. Whether you’re cleansing your face or body, we recommend using a cleanser that foams when applied because it removes impurities more effectively, is gentle on the skin, and lasts longer. If impurities remain in your skin for too long, they can cause irritation that can damage the skin barrier.
Feed the deeper

Once your skin is cleansed and prepped, it’s time to nourish the deeper layers of the skin. Having a serum that easily absorbs into the skin will ensure that even the deepest of skin layers receive the nourishment and hydration they desperately need . After applying a serum, let it absorb in your skin for 60 seconds before applying lotions or creams.
